A Night Hike at the Oscars

The North Western District Rover Crew successfully organised the annual Night Hike through the Suburbs of Johannesburg for the Scout Troops from this District.

44 Scouts from seven different troops hiked from Delta Park in the cold wet wintery evening of April 23. Nothing could put a damper on their spirits as they hiked to six different bases, testing their team spirit, stamina and Scout skills.

Each base was themed to different award winning movies. The “English Patient” Base had the patrols building a stretcher to carry a ‘sick’ patient, while at the “Harry Potter” Base their pioneering skills were put to the test as they had to figure out how to salvage’ some ‘potion’. At the “Indiana Jones” Base the Scouts built a Bridge with ropes that the entire patrol had to safely cross.

And there were many other challenges along the way too. Luckily for the cold wet Scouts, the one Base had them making their own pancakes, which went down very well at the wee hours of the morning.

The Rover Crew had arranged with local law-enforcement to ensure the safety of the Scouts along the routes as they navigated their way around Victory Park; Linden and surrounding areas throughout the night.

The tired Scouts from the Fairlands Air Scouts happily endured the 11km hike. “It was such fun” is the reply from most of the Scouts when asked what they thought of the event. “I can’t wait till next year’s hike”.
