Know the new police ranks in South Africa
From April 1, 2010 on the South African police are now known as the South African police force (SAPF).
National police commissioner General Bheki Cele says the move aims to introduce a sense of discipline among officers.
“We have taken a stance as this government of fighting crime and fighting it tough. The rank changes are therefore in line with our transformation of the Force, not only in terms of a name-change but change in attitude, thinking and operational duties," said Bheki Cele.
The changes to the ranks are:
Old rank (1995-2010): Commissioner - New rank (April 1, 2010): General
Old rank: Deputy National Commissioner - New rank: Lieutenant-General
Old rank: Divisional Commissioner / Provincial Commissioner - New rank: Lieutenant-General
Old rank: Assistant Commissioner - New rank: Major-General
Old rank: Director - New rank: Brigadier
Old rank: Senior Superintendent - New rank: Colonel
Old rank: Superintendent - New rank: Lieutenant Colonel
Old rank: Captain - New rank: Major / Captain / Lieutenant
Old rank: Inspector - New rank: Warrant Officer
Old rank: Sergeant- New rank: Sergeant
Old rank: Constable - New rank: Constable
