Recycling Your Kitchen-Waste is Easy

Digester, Strainer and Bokashi.

In this, the Green Decade we are all tasked with taking responsibility for our environment. While many of us are recycling and have multiple separation most of us do not recycle our food-waste.

Earth Probiotic Recycling Solutions Pty. Ltd. focuses on the recycling of food-waste into microbial rich compost and soil. Using bokashi fermentation all food-waste can be recycled including cooked and uncooked meat, seafood and small bones.

Developed in 1980 in Japan, bokashi food-waste fermentation (“bokashi” is Japanese for “fermented organic matter”) is established internationally, especially in countries where food and organic wet-waste is banned from landfills.

The system is simple and easy to manage. Food-waste is added to an anaerobic - “without air” - digester and then layered with bokashi. Bokashi is made from human grade wheat bran and is infused with naturally occurring bacteria, yeasts and fungi.

The micro-organisms get to work on the waste changing it’s nature and eliminating pathogens. During the fermentation process there are no malodorous smells and neither are flies or roaches attracted to the waste.

When the bucket is full the digester is left for an additional two weeks to complete fermentation. After that the waste can be added to a compost heap (where it accelerates the composting process), dug into a trench for over planting, or even added to a wormery (which enables all food-waste to be fed to worms and not just fresh waste).

Within four to six weeks of adding to a compost heap the waste completely disappears leaving behind a microbial rich matrix for gardening or agricultural purposes.

Working with Protea Hotels, Southern Sun, The Peech Hotel, and many others, Earth Probiotic provides solutions for households, companies and hotels/restaurants. The solution enables all food-waste to be diverted from landfills thus reducing greenhouse gases. Quick, simple with no negative consequences, the Bokashi system helps individuals and companies turn food-waste from an environmental hazard into a environmental benefit.
