How green is your Valentine?

If you are a hopeless romantic, like me, you will find that unique valentine ideas are hard to come by, never mind making your Valentines Day green on top of that!

Just to make you think about exactly what it costs “the earth” on Valentines day, have a look at the following facts:

• Around a billion valentine cards gets sent each year, being the second runner up of card sending events (Christmas being first)
• 25% of all seasonal cards annually sent are Valentines
• 36 million (WOW, that is a huge amount of chocolates) boxes of heart shaped boxes are sold each year
• 10% of engagements happens on Valentines day

Now, just to put that in context, the one billion cards that are sent each year – if laid end to end, would stretch around the world 5 times!

How can you make a difference this year? We have searched the net and came across the below tips. Make this Valentines different and fun, all the while being conscious about your environment.

• Send a card made from recycled paper. Even better, grab those old cards from years gone by, and make a new card!
• E-Cards are all the rage nowadays, so no need for you to go searching the shops
• Choose organic/locally grown flowers - ask your florist
• Make a donation to an environmental organization of your choice
• Don’t know what to buy your loved one? Give a gift certificate for holistic therapies, e.g. massage, naturopath, health spa etc.
• Book a retreat in a wildlife reserve, park or natural area. Your business will help support the running of such establishments
