Crime Brief - 16th March 2009

Residents are requested to please try and secure their homes at all times. When leaving your home please activate the security system, even if you are only going to be away for a few minutes. Close and lock all doors and windows properly when leaving the premises. DO NOT hand keys to everyone to have access to both your property and house. The current HOT SPOT sectors are: Sector 3 (Weltevreden Park) and Sector 4 (Wilgeheuwel), with Mondays being the most common day and the time that the crime occurs is between 06:00 and 12:00 midday.

Please supply your domestic worker and/or gardener, who is at home during the day, with the Honeydew SAPS’s contact number (011) 801-8614/5 or 10111 to phone us if they notice any suspicious activity BUT please ensure that they know your complete street and suburb address (preferably give them the nearest corner too).

Church Robbery: At approximately 20:30 a group of eight men and one female with firearms, stormed into the River Song Church on Malibongwe drive in North Riding. They held up the Congregation and took cell phones, jewellery and cash. The suspects then took the caretaker to his room, on the same premises, and took a DVD player and cell phone after which the caretaker was shot in the cheek. He was taken to Hospital but is in a stabile condition. The Honeydew TRIO task team is currently investigating the case and anyone with information is asked to contact Constable Andy Mankayi on: 082 413 2141.

Business Robbery: On Saturday morning at approximately 10:00 a complainant (store manager of a Jewellery shop in Clear Water Mall) was busy in the store when he was approached by a male who wanted to purchase something. Two of the other “customers” then took out firearms and pointed them at the complainant. The suspects took jewellery, cell phones and cash after which they fled the scene.

House Robberies (TOWN HOUSE COMPLEX - WILGEHEUWEL):
• On Friday evening at approximately 21:20 the complainant was in his bedroom when he was approached by an unknown male who instructed him to sit down. Two more suspects came into the bedroom with the complainant’s friend. The complainant and his friend were tied up. The suspects robbed them of a laptop, cell phones, cash and other personal items. As these suspects left the complainant’s house they saw another resident from the complex at his vehicle at another unit. They instructed this man to lie down and took his wallet. The suspects then took this man into his house and robbed him and his wife of a Plasma TV, cell phones, cash and other property. The suspects then fled the scene.
• On Sunday evening the complainant was in his townhouse in (Weltevreden Park) at about 01:30 when he was awoken by a noise in bedroom. He noticed armed suspects in his bedroom. The suspects tied the complainant up and ransacked the house taking cell phones and cash. According to the complainant he left the sliding door open for fresh air and this is where the suspects gained entry into the house.

URGENT WARNING TO ALL EMPLOYERS!!!!

Two different incidents were reported where employers were robbed of large amounts of cash. The money was being drawn at the bank to pay out wages. During the last incident a complainant was robbed of over a R100 000-00 in cash in the parking area of a shopping complex. Please DO NOT carry large amounts of money with you rather let your employees open bank accounts and transfer the money electronically, so that you do not make yourself a target!
