Lack of communication
I don't understand how come the community will communicate over websites about crime and not be relaying these things to their local newspapers.
We all know that the SAPS only give the newspapers information that makes them look good in the eyes of the public, but they don't communicate everyday crimes to journalists.
The only way for crime to decrease is if everyone stands together, by letting the press know immediately when something has happened or is busy happening.
They will then publish those articles, allowing more community members to become aware of what's happening under their noses, and this way to be more aware and vigilant.
Why would you bother sending info to a newspaper when it comes out late and is static? This website is a far better communication method.
There are so many people within our communities that don't have access to computers or blogging sights, therefore they need to keep in touch with community issues via their local community paper, which is delivered free to their homes.
Communicate via the web by all means, but share with those that are less fortunate than you.
Should we not all be looking out for each other and sharing information with each other in order to overcome our problems.
Not everyone has access to the net and rely on their newspapers, television and radio for news.I noticed that overseas the
Police have been using Twitter...maybe if our police stations used it then everyone in that area could follow them on twitter and get updates
on their cellphones, that is if the cellphones get supported for South African users.Social networking is a good tool as everyone is using it these days
Correct there are many people who don't have access to the internet and yes most people have access to cell phones. But here again what are the costs involved of using something like twitter. Most people are on pay as you go, so how much extra are they going to have to pay to stay informed, where community papers are dropped off free of charge to homes and businesses - thereby making them easily available to the less fortunate.
To me the local community paper is the best option at informing the community on a weekly basis of what has been going on in their area's.
Well currently cellphone sms's are not supported in this country for twitter, but I use it online.
I have firefox and have installed friendbar so while I am browsing the internet or working on my forums,I am continually being updated. So for example if I was at hiome and there was a robbery in progress at Spar up the road...I would be alerted via Friendbar and would stay away.Other applications you can use for twitter are twirl and you don't have to be using IE or firefox to get updates with that.
Currently a huge amount of people use mxit/facebook etc...all I am saying is why not take advantage of something a vast amount of people use already in this country...believe me they would spread the word to those who don't.
I agree with you regarding the newspaper...I anxiously await the Northside chronicle every week...but they don't report every single crime and this is where twitter etc could be utilized they would inform you as it is happening...community newspapers can't do that you are getting the news after the fact.
